On Saturday morning I dropped my Neon off at the CarX on Lake Street, East of Hiawatha. Of all the CarXes in the Twin Cities, that's "mine." For a college graduation gift, my mom paid to have the A/C in the Neon recharged. Then, three weeks later when all the freon leaked out, a very cool mechanic named Jon ran Super Seal through the A/C system and replaced the freon for free.
They've also replaced my struts (oh, and when they put it up on the lift one of the rear ones just fell off) and fixed a retainer seal around the camshaft gasket. They've gotten a lot of my time and money, is what I'm saying.
But Pat, one of the guys there, has also helped me out with little things for free, such as helping me with my wiper blades last winter when they weren't doing their job. And on Saturday, when I took the Neon in because it's been doing a swervy thing when I brake on the freeway, they spent a few hours looking it over, then finally charged me nothing because while it has the symptoms of a pinched caliper, they couldn't actually locate a problem.
When I asked what I owed for the time, Pat said "I'm not overly concerned about it" and charged me nothing. When does that ever happen? Although maybe they thought they'd toss me a freebie seeing as I have paid CarX an average of $135/month in maintenance over the past year. Sigh.
And when I walked home after dropping the car off in the morning, a man who walked by me dropped some money and another person on the sidewalk told him. On Lake Street, no less! People are good.
